Who are we and what do we do
Business, Employment and Skills are part of Gateshead Council. We are based at the Civic Centre, Gateshead and provide the following services:
- working with partners to enable new and existing businesses to thrive and create good quality jobs
- managing the Council's business centre portfolio, providing quality workspace for new and young businesses
- influencing local governance, policy, spending and delivery of services to meet economic and housing priorities and needs
Business Gateshead is a dedicated service to help businesses to startāup, grow or become more resilient and attract new businesses to Gateshead. This includes responding to enquiries for business support and proactively engaging with businesses through a range of organised events. We are also responsible for the delivery of range of employment support schemes services to the benefit of residents including:
- Working Gateshead
- specialist support for refugees, people experiencing multiple complex barriers to work and care experienced young people
- developing residents' skills, enabling them to secure and progress in suitable employment or start up in business
- removing barriers to residents' employment and business success

What type of information is collected from you
We collect personal information to understand your needs and provide services. Information may include:

- business name
- company number/Unique Tax Reference number
- employment details
- benefit details
- National Insurance (NI) number
- proof of identity (such as driver's license or passport)

How we collect information about you
We collect information about you from various sources to ensure that we meet your needs, including when you register with us, request a service or participate in our schemes.

- in person, on the telephone, via video call, when you email us or through attendance of our events
- when you complete surveys and provide feedback either online or in person

- third parties which are sub-contracted to deliver a service on our behalf
- from elected Members and MPs (as your representative)

Our purpose for collecting personal information is to enable us to:

Our lawful basis for processing sensitive personal data is explicit consent or substantial public interest.
Who your information can be shared with
Our Corporate Privacy Notice explains information sharing the Council carries out. This sharing fulfils statutory obligations, legal requirements and service delivery. Business, Employment and Skills can share your information with:
- organisations who provide support relating to employment, health, training, wellbeing or financial advice - such as DWP, the Home Office and HMRC.
- organisations that fund our work such as the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority or other relevant local authorities
If we wish to share your information with other council services or third parties for purposes outside of those listed above, we will ask your permission.
How long we will keep your information
We keep your information for as long as we need to provide services to you. We may also need to keep your information in accordance with legal or other obligations. Where we have no need to keep your data it will be securely destroyed. We keep a Record of Processing Activity (a requirement under the GDPR). This sets out the specific retention periods applicable in different circumstances.
