Gateshead is home to a diverse range of businesses that not only serve the local community but also export their products and services to a broader market. These enterprises are vital in shaping the economic landscape of the borough.
Gateshead Council is working to support all businesses in the borough to grow, develop and attract and retain the best people for Gateshead, so we can make it a great place to live, work and build a business.
Cabinet Member for Economy, Councillor Malcolm Brain recently embarked on a tour of Gateshead, visiting local businesses that are at the heart of the borough's economic growth. During his visit, he discussed the invaluable contributions these businesses make to the local area, providing jobs and driving income into the borough.
Councillor Brain engaged in positive conversations with local entrepreneurs and business owners, where he learned about their experiences, challenges, and aspirations.
Throughout the tour, Councillor Brain visited several diverse businesses, including manufacturing facilities, retail establishments and technology startups which included:
· Mandy Lights - an illuminations and lighting effects solutions for major events across the World.
· Prism Coffee - a recent start up café within Saltwell Park.
· Mind Gym and XR Therapeutics - two high growth innovation led businesses using technology and new approaches to support mental health and wellbeing.
· Newcastle Tool & Gauge - a modern manufacturing facility on Team Valley who provide specialist precision engineering services.
· Astley Signs - Sign makers and brand design consultations who are renown for supplying the iconic Great North Run sign on the Tyne Bridge.
· Advantex Network Solutions - a fast growing IT network solutions provider.
· The Millin Charity - an independent charity which opened a centre for women's economic independence in Gateshead in 2021 and specialise in the delivery of enterprise support for female led businesses.
Visiting these local businesses demonstrated the innovative and enterprising spirit that characterizes Gateshead's business community. Councillor Brain praised these businesses for their dedication to the borough and their role in creating employment opportunities, ultimately strengthening the local economy.
Councillor Brain said, "Our local businesses are integral to the community. They not only create jobs for our residents but also contribute significantly to the borough's economic development. It was inspiring to see the passion and commitment of these businesses who are investing their time, effort and resources into making Gateshead a thriving and prosperous place."
Councillor Brain also discussed plans and initiatives, linked to Gateshead Council's Thrive agenda which aims to stimulate growth for businesses to thrive in Gateshead.
