Business support programmes to help you start, grow and scale your business

International Womens Day - GM Training

In the run up to International Women's Day this year, we're really pleased to be sharing a handful of stories celebrating women doing amazing things in and around Gateshead.

Having faced redundancy in December 2018, Gillian and Mandy decided it was time to forge their own path. In 2019, they set up GM Training to support 13 to 16 year olds in Gateshead and across the north east experiencing challenges with conventional education. The business's philosophy revolves around listening to these young people, creating bespoke learning programmes for them, and fostering an environment where they can thrive.

GM Training's alternative provision goes beyond academics, offering work placements in collaboration with local employers. Students dedicate a few days a week to real-world work experience, alongside maintaining a reduced school timetable. This approach equips young people with life skills and transferable knowledge, whilst also enabling them to make informed decisions about their futures. Many of the students GM Training has supported are now shining in employment or further education.

Looking ahead, Gillian and Mandy are extending their business to support 16 to 18 year olds into employment or higher education too.

As International Women's Day approaches, Gillian and Mandy hope to #inspireinclusion and encourage other women to explore setting up their own business. The catalyst for their journey was speaking to our Business Gateshead team, who provided guidance on their plans and helped turn these into a reality.

We're really proud to have supported Gillian and Mandy on their journey and to see them making a difference for young people in Gateshead.
